Mesabi Community Band to hold Fall Concert

The Mesabi Community Band Fall Concert on Oct. 16, at 7 p.m., at the Eveleth City Auditorium, will feature the talents of two band members. The program cover will feature a painting, “A Man and His Horn,” by baritone player and artist, Ron Maki. Skip Ferris, in the tuba section, has composed The Hampton March, as a tribute to his hometown.
Directors Bill Lavato and Daniel Melby have chosen several pieces for the audience’s enjoyment: Music from Apollo 13, Gershwin! (a medley of Gershwin tunes), A Festival Prelude, Marche Diabolique and Air For Band. The musical selections will also include The Texas Tech On Parade March, by Ed Chenette, a director of the Eveleth Municipal and Eveleth High School Bands from 1920 through 1922.
Ron Maki, baritone player, was a public-school art instructor for 34 years. He describes his painting as a cross between abstract and classical styles. One could also say as a cross between jazz and classical music.
Skip Ferris composed The Hampton March as a tribute to his hometown of Hampton, Iowa, and in memory of two men who started and supported him in his journey in music.
The public is encouraged to enjoy this concert. Admission is a free-will donation.
