LVCC to Host Four Events in August

Mark your calendars for these four exciting and varied events to be hosted in August at the Lake Vermilion Cultural Center.

Author David Pearsall will talk about his books, Son of Wake Island and World War II – Honor and Remembrance on August 14 at 7:00 pm. Pearsall, a Virginia native, wrote the first book about his father, former mayor of Virginia J. Edward Pearsall who was a prisoner of war for four years on Wake Island in the Pacific. His new book is a tribute to the men and women who lived through World War II. A free will donation will be accepted.

On August 16 at 6:30 pm, Steve Solkela will return to St. Mary’s Hall for an entertaining program called “Steve Solkela and the Roadkill Boys”. The ever popular Solkela will be joined by the Roadkill Boys, a bluegrass gospel band from Duluth. Their repertoire incudes traditional and contemporary bluegrass, acoustic country, Celtic, folk and Americana styles of music. A suggested donation at the door will be $10 for adults and $5 for those under 18.

A Wine and Watercolor class will be held on August 21 at 6:30 pm with local artist Linda Smith. The subject this year is an owl. The cost is $45 and participants must register ahead of time online at vermilionculturalcenter.org This class is held in the lower level classroom at the Vermilion Park Inn located at 30 Center Street in Soudan. Register soon since this class is limited to 20 people and it usually fills quickly.

On August 28 at 7:00 pm, “Songs of The Annishinaabeg, A Night Sky Drum Program” will be held in St. Mary’s Hall. It will be a special evening of Anishinaabe Nagamon, where the Night Sky Drum group will share songs and drum teachings. The concert is being sponsored by Waawaate Programs, a local 501c3 nonprofit organization (waawaateprograms.org). A suggested donation at the door will be $10 for adults and $5 for those under 18.

The summer programming at the LVCC is made possible by a grant from the Arrowhead Regional Arts Council. More details will appear in this paper as the dates approach.
