UPS Truck on Fire

Crews in Tower were fighting a fire that engulfed a UPS delivery truck. According to the Northland Fire Wire, the fire broke out just after 5:30 p.m. on Thursday evening. The UPS truck was in front of Zup’s Food Market on Main Street in Tower.

Save the Date

The Lake Vermilion Cultural Center will be hosting story teller and song leader, Gloria Anderson Hegg in St. Mary’s Hall at 6:00 p.m on May 28. Her presentation will focus on the immigrant stories of those who landed on the Iron Range. Gloria entertained people for years at Ironworld (now Iron Range Discovery Center) in Chisholm. Admission details will be available next week in the local papers and on the LVCC website and Facebook page.

MEMORIAL DAY TRIBUTE MAY 26, 2025

Plans are being finalized for the Tower Soudan area-wide annual Memorial Day Tribute to be held on Monday, May 26, 2025, at the Herb Lamppa Civic Center from 10 a.m. to noon. This tribute will honor the military service and sacrifice of our men and women in uniform, their families at home, and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. The names of local veterans killed in action and other deceased veterans will be read.

Canoeist body recovered in BWCA

On May 10, 2025 at approximately 2:17 PM, US Forest Service - USFS employees, reported to 911, that they had located a capsize canoe on Iron Lake in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area - BWCA north of Ely, Minnesota. Upon investigating further the USFS employees, located a deceased individual and their gear floating near the canoe. The deceased was wearing a life jacket.It is believed that the individual was on a solo canoe trip into the BWCA. The USFS Beaver was flown in to recover the body. The identity of the victim is being held, pending notification of their family. The incident remains under investigation by St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office and Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office.

House fire

On May 8th, 2025 at 3:08pm, the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Officer responded to the 4500 Block of Serenity Point Road, in Greenwood Township, due to a reported structure fire. While emergency services were responding, it was learned that the structure was fully engulfed and spreading to the nearby woods. Once on scene, it was determined that a small campfire had spread and started the cabin on fire and then the surrounding woods. Multiple fire departments responded and were able to contain the fire so that no other property was lost. There were no injuries associated with this incident. The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind citizens that the fire danger is high and to follow MN DNR recommendations for campfires, over the fishing opener weekend. The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Greenwood Fire Dept., Breiting Fire Dept., Tower Fire Dept., Tower Ambulance Service, the MN DNR and the U.S. Forest Service.

A huge pinch took placed during World War Two when Auxiliarists patrolled America’s coasts rescuing merchant mariners affected by enemy submarine attack. After the war, the Auxiliary assumed its intended role - promoting recreational boating safety.
