Grandma’s Fruit Fool (Vintage English Dessert)
A “fruit fool” dates back to at least the 16th century and was a favorite because it’s quick, elegant, and only needs a few ingredients.
Ingredients:
• 2 cups fresh or frozen fruit (berries, peaches, plums, or a mix)
• ¼–½ cup sugar (adjust to fruit sweetness)
• 1 tsp lemon juice (optional, for brightness)
• 1 cup heavy cream (or chilled whipping cream)
• ½ tsp vanilla extract
Instructions:
1. Cook the fruit: In a small saucepan, combine fruit, sugar, and lemon juice. Simmer on low until the fruit softens and releases its juices (about 8–10 minutes). Mash lightly with a fork. Cool completely.
2. Whip the cream: In a chilled bowl, whip the cream with vanilla until soft peaks form.
3. Fold & swirl: Gently fold the cooled fruit into the whipped cream. For a pretty marbled look, only fold a few times so streaks of fruit remain.
4. Serve: Spoon into glasses or bowls and chill for at least 30 minutes.
Tips for a Unique Twist:
• Use gooseberries, currants, or rhubarb for a truly old-fashioned taste.
• Add a splash of sherry or elderflower liqueur for an adult version.
• Top with crumbled shortbread or ladyfingers for a little crunch.
