Fishing report!

Week #7 6/24-6/30

Water temp: 68-72

And just like that, June is over! This was the best month of walleye fishing I have ever had on Vermilion and it’s not even close!! I have never seen Vermilion fish this well before and it’s only getting better every season! With that being said….its bug hatch time.

The mayflies are hatching, the sun is shining and there isn’t much wind to speak of. This has made for some tough conditions the last few days and it’s only going to continue as we move on into the dog days of summer. The first two weeks of July are historically tough on Vermilion but you can still catch some fish if you put some time and effort in!

This past week we were still on the bobber bite but it’s slowed down dramatically! We have been getting fish doing a little bit of everything. Bobbers, jig and minnow, jig and crawler, paddle tails, and lindy rigs. I have heard of a few fishing being caught on slow death and spinner rigs too.

The depths we have been focusing on are 6-15’ rock humps and points. The main lake reefs have been starting to hold a few fish as well. Things will be a challenge for the next few weeks as fish will be super transitional until they set up on the sand humps mid to late July!

The three biggest keys for this time of year I can give you are this…

Fish early and late. Sunrise or before till 9 or 10 in the morning will give you the best shot at catching fish. Also fishing until it’s dark outside can provide a quality bite.

Don’t be afraid to go catch smallmouth during the mid day hours! High sunny skies and no wind are perfect conditions for big vermilion footballs and they are a blast!

Try to find areas with less bugs! Easier said than done, but usually that’s where your more active fish will be.

July is starting to fill up every day. The second half of July into August is a very fun time to catch walleyes on vermilion! But one of the best bites of the entire year is coming quickly and that’s the lead core bite! Those trips are starting to book up as well so don’t hesitate to reach out and get on the books! There’s no better time to get the family together and reel in a bunch of fish than the lead core bite! Give me a call or text (218) 404-9200 anytime to book a trip!

As always, tight lines!
