57-Year-Old Ely Man Identified in Echo Trail Crash Pulled from Burning Vehicle by Bystanders

ELY, Minn. — Authorities have identified the man injured in Friday’s serious single-vehicle crash on Echo Trail as Jeremy Swanson, 57, of Ely. Swanson was rescued from his burning vehicle by bystanders after it rolled over and caught fire north of Ely. According to the St. Louis County Sheriff’s

Office, the crash occurred around 2:49 p.m. on October 3 near the 1500 block of Echo Trail. Deputies said Swanson’s vehicle left the roadway, struck a rock ledge, went airborne, and rolled into a ditch before igniting. Several people in the area witnessed the crash and rushed to help. They were able to pull Swanson from the wreckage moments before the vehicle became fully engulfed in flames.

Authorities credited their quick action for saving his life. Emergency crews from the Morse-Fall Lake Fire Department, Ely Police, Ely Ambulance, and Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene.

Swanson sustained a head injury and other trauma in the crash. He was first transported to Ely-Bloomenson Community Hospital, then airlifted to Duluth for further treatment. His current condition has not been released. The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the cause of the crash. Officials say factors such as speed, mechanical issues, or road conditions have not been ruled out. Authorities remind drivers to use extra caution along the winding Echo Trail, especially as fall weather brings changing road conditions and earlier nightfall.
